Flowcrete has been involved in the new-build of an extensive hangar facility for German aviation giant Lufthansa Technik based at Malta International Airport, just outside of Valetta.
The project, which has been ongoing for some 18 months, covers a total surface area of 38,000m² and has been implemented primarily to expand Lufthansa Technik’s operations at the site. The new facility includes three separates hangars as well as all associated back shops, warehousing and infrastructure.
The first hangar to be completed offers servicing facilities for three short-range, narrow-bodied planes such as the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, while the others, with doors over 26 metres high and a full height of ten and a half storeys, are able to accommodate two long-haul aircraft from the Airbus A330/A340 family for overhaul work.
A pigmented version of Flowcrete’s Peran STC, known locally under the name of “Hammerflow”, has been used to floor the entire area of the new €60m development.
Peran STC is a seamless epoxy-based clear resin system that offers excellent resistance to UV rays as well as a wide range of chemical compounds used in the aviation industry.
Peran STC also delivers a number of tangible environmental benefits when compared to other flooring systems of its kind. Not only is it virtually odourless but its solvent and Nonylphenol-free formulation ensures that no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) are released to atmosphere during application to meet high air quality standards.
