Flowcrete saw first hand how Vauxhall’s commitment to lean manufacturing has paid dividends to the success of the company’s Ellesmere Port plant in Merseyside – home to the Astra. Working to the adage, ‘A Place for Everything and Everything in Its Place’ Vauxhall has utilized a 5S workplace organization policy, based on sift, sort, sweep, sustain and self discipline.
As part of the company’s ongoing bid to improve standards, Vauxhall has utilised the expertise of 5S flooring experts Flowcrete to develop a durable, functional floor, which supports the procedures already introduced as part of its commitment to lean manufacturing.
At Vauxhall, Flowcrete’s Flowcoat SF41, in grey, has been installed in the production areas, with work zones, line markings and walkways applied in a range of colours. The new floor is scratch and impact resistant, easy to clean and maintain. The use of different colours and lineage makes the floor an active part of the company’s operations. It also stands up to oil and stains and can deliver the necessary load and skid resistance associated with the movement of thousands of cars each day around the plant.
“The floor creates a hard-wearing finish underfoot that is geared up to the needs of automotive manufacture. The floor has been designed to identify the layout of the factory, playing a part in keeping things in organised sections and leaving gangways clear. Yellow lines denote different zones, green shows walkway areas and yellow and black represent hazardous areas.”
