Sponsorship Deal for Successful Year

A historic year in the life of Congleton Rugby Club has got off to a great start with the news that main sponsors Flowcrete will continue to back the club.

Congleton - believed to be one of the world’s oldest rugby clubs – has a long-standing relationship with the Sandbach-based flooring manufacturer.

The company is delighted to be on board with Congleton once more as the club celebrates its 150th anniversary.

Flowcrete’s Managing Director Mark Greaves is a long-standing Congleton member and the club’s current President.

Mark said: “We are proud to once again be associated with Congleton Rugby Club as they celebrate a significant landmark.

“Events will be planned to promote the club throughout the year as we mark the 150th year.

“We have already secured two England front row legends from different eras to join the celebrations.

“Brian Moore will be guest of honour at our Sportsmen’s Dinner in November while Sale Sharks; Andrew Sheridan will join us for our Annual Dinner in April.

“One of the primary reasons for Flowcrete’s sponsorship of the club is Congleton’s thriving junior section. More than 200 youngsters regularly train and play at Congleton which is a great achievement for a comparatively small club.

“The club has also been instrumental in reintroducing rugby into local schools, a policy that is crucial to the future of the sport, not only in Congleton, but across the country in general.”

Congleton currently fields three adult teams and Mark said he hoped that the 150th anniversary celebrations would help raise the profile of the club and attract more potential players and social members.

“Anyone who is interested in playing rugby should contact the club or come down to one of our training sessions on Thursday evenings at Hankinson’s Fields,” he added.

Flowcrete has been a main sponsor of Congleton Rugby Club for the last 10 years.

Congleton can lay claim to being one of the world’s oldest Rugby clubs, with the RFU’s own archivists showing that rugby was first played in the town in 1860.

The current club reformed in the 1930s and has played on the pitches alongside the banks of the River Dane since the 1950s.

The success of the Congleton Rugby Club can in part be attributed to it’s many sponsors and supporters including, as well as Flowcrete, Back Office Support Services, Cheshire Bakeries Distribution, Sliders UK and The Wharf Inn. With this support the club can continue to provide the lowest cost rugby in the area.
